GROTE MARKT: A “SUPER” MARKET!!

After two years of discussions and deliberations, opening day had finally arrived!  On Saturday, June 12th, 2010, city councilwoman Jannie Visscher officially opened the new market on the Grote Markt in Groningen by releasing hundreds of festive balloons.

And what a festive day it was! In a word: FANTASTIC. Beautiful weather, a fantastic atmosphere, with a wellnigh international ambiance. The new food court was busy all day with shoppers enjoying a snack, a drink, and a few rays.  And let’s not forget the rest of the market, where it’s an adventure to explore the new arrangement of the market stands. A generous entryway on the north side of the market entices the public to come and have a look. The section between the two markets is also inviting: a wide path which has been created to accommodate shoppers, giving them ready access to café terraces.

The Grote Markt was the bubbling heart of Groningen that day, with extra activities including six market vendors enthusiastically pitching various wares, a football match (organized by the football club Oosterparkers), asparagus tasting, and a street organ. That is the way both vendors and shoppers like their market to be. This market has a bright future, and it will undoubtedly serve as a model for other markets in The Netherlands.

Food Court
The central area of the market has become a food court, where the majority of food vendors have found a spot. The food court has tables and parasols.

With the completion of these plans, the Grote Markt in Groningen will become one of the most revolutionary markets in The Netherlands! Other markets in the whole country will look with interest at this new concept. And so, once more, the market in Groningen proves that what others dream of can happen here.
